As we get older it becomes more and more important for ‘easy access’ to all the hard to reach places in the kitchen. Living independently and safely in our own homes is crucial, which is why we recommend having an accessible design!

Key benefits of an accessible kitchen design for the ageing community are:

Increased safety: An accessible kitchen design can reduce the risk of falls and other accidents that can be common among elderly people. This can be achieved by installing pull-down baskets for hard to reach wall cabinets, pull-out larders, non-slip flooring, using slip-resistant mats, and making sure that appliances and cabinets are at a safe and easily reachable height.

Improved mobility: An accessible kitchen design can make it easier for elderly people to move around the kitchen and perform daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and washing dishes. This can be achieved by installing wider doorways, lowering countertops, using fully extendable drawers and ensuring that there is enough space for a wheelchair or mobility aid.

Increased independence: An accessible kitchen design can help elderly people to maintain their independence by enabling them to prepare meals and carry out other daily tasks without assistance. This can help to improve their quality of life and reduce the need for outside assistance.

Enhanced functionality: An accessible kitchen design can also make it easier for elderly people to use appliances and other kitchen equipment. This can be achieved by installing appliances that are wifi-assisted, easy to use and have clear instructions, as well as providing adequate lighting and storage solutions.

Improved mental health: An accessible kitchen design can help to improve the mental health and well-being of elderly people by providing a space that is comfortable, functional, and safe. This can help to reduce feelings of isolation and improve overall quality of life.
